Happy Halloween a Little Early

My disclaimer. I do not believe in ghosts, but I cannot explain what happened at St. Simon’s Lighthouse in St. Simons, Georgia.

My daughter and I love lighthouses. We were visiting St. Simons and went up to the top of the lighthouse. Neither of us believe in ghosts, but as we took each step on the metal spiral stairs, we heard echoes that sounded like someone else was on the steps.. We looked up the open steps and saw nothing. We looked down the stairs and saw no one. Strange. When we arrived at the top, there was a man laying on the steps to the light with a rubber mallet in his hand, pounding on a step. He wore older clothes, navy pants, a white shirt, and older-looking work shoes. We decided he was a worker. We opened the door and walked onto the top of the lighthouse, but it was so windy that we came back inside. When we entered the landing to the light, the man was gone. I looked up at the light, but no one was there. We heard no one on the steps going down.

A couple of years later, I watched either the History or Discovery channel at Halloween, and they told about Freddy, the ghost of St. Simon’s Lighthouse. Freddy was the assistant lighthouse keeper around the early 1900s. He fell in love with the lighthouse keeper’s wife, and the lighthouse keeper found out about the love affair. He shot and killed Freddy.

At the beginning, I stated I did not believe in ghosts, and I still don’t. The man on the steps wore clothes from another time period. The workers at the lighthouse wore tan uniforms, not navy and white. Several years later, we were at St. Simons, and I climbed the lighthouse again with my son and grandchildren. The lady at the desk said, “You might see Freddy.” I told her I’d already seen him. Whatever it was we saw, it was strange. No one could have run down the stairs while we were outside. Strange things happen every day.

I’m using a new program for my blog, and I’m still learning to use it. Please bear with me as I practice on you, the reader.
