Memorial Day was first organized by formally enslaved people on May 5, 1866. Businesses closed their doors in remembrance of those soldiers who lost their lives fighting for freedom.
Through the years, many men and women of all colors have lost their lives that we may have the freedoms we enjoy. This is the day to remember those fallen heroes. It\’s not for cookouts, fireworks, and picnics on the beach. It\’s a day to remember those who gave their lives for our country.
The Memorial Day we observe today was previously called Decoration Day. Family went to cemeteries and put flowers on the graves of their families who had fallen in the line of duty. In 1971, Memorial Day became an official holiday on the last Monday of May.
While you are enjoying time with family today, remember those parents who never saw their children again. War is brutal, but I am thankful for those who gave all they had for our country and our freedoms. Say a prayer of thanks for those brave soldiers today.
