FUZZY WRITING

by Kathy Cretsinger

\"\"The other day I pulled something out of the dryer covered in tissue fuzz.I had been in a hurry and didn\’t check all the pockets, and a tissue was hidden inside. Sometimes we have to pick off the fuzz or lint in our manuscripts like we pick off the fuzz from a tissue. We all have those fuzzy writing days.

There are a lot of fuzzy words we insert in our manuscripts that we probably don\’t think anything about, but they can sure make a mess of our words on paper. I have two fuzzy words, just and that. We don\’t realize what we are doing, but one word used continuously can make a reader put a book down. Other words we see a lot are really and so. There are places for those words, but they should not be used as fillers. Watch them even when you are using them in dialog. It is boring anytime you use it. We are all better than that. The best thing to do is to pay attention when you write.

We write fuzzy when we our punctuation is not good. Commas can drive an editor crazy. Some of us love commas. I\’m afraid I\’m one of them. If you have doubt, use Grammarly. If you only use it for commas, it\’s worth it.

The best way to find these misused words is to read your manuscript aloud. All of it. Read it in a quiet room where you will not be disturbed by family, phone, or friends. You will be amazed at how you wrote.
