When I meet someone for the first time, I rarely tell them I am an author. Yes, my first book hit #1 on Amazon several years ago, but I hardly ever mention it. Still, I love to write.
These are some things I\’ve learned as a writer.
- You do not get younger and have more time to write. I never thought about getting older and time running out. I always thought I\’d have years and years to write.
- Learn all you can from experienced writers. Writers who have written for years have more knowledge in their little finger than fresh writers.
- Ask questions. Every question is important.
- Go to conferences. Even the small ones can give you more one-on-one time with established authors.
- Make yourself known on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. When people read your name multiple times, they will remember you.
- Be excited about the book you\’re writing, and the one\’s you\’ve written previously.
- Do not be shy about telling people you are an author. Don\’t push it down their throat, but gently let them know.
- Write every day. Everyone tells you that, but take time to write something each day. It doesn\’t have to be the book you\’re writing. Blogs count as writing time.
- Be positive and help others on their writing journey. We need to encourage all writers.
- Thank God for giving you this ability. Thank Him for people who have entered your life and helped you.
Writing is a lonely job. It\’s a very private job. So many authors have helped me with my writing, and I thank each of them so much. I can\’t name them because I\’ll leave out someone. All of you who have helped me, I thank you with all my heart.

Thanks for this post. I am learning not to be shy about telling folks I am an author. I am so thankful for others who weren’t shy!
It is hard to talk about what we did. When I worked for a newspaper, my name was plastered on the paper several times each print. Since we’ve moved to another state, very few understand what I do. I’ve found it’s much easier to make comments as you have done here. I also comment several posts on Facebook. That seems to help. We have to be known to sell a book. Very few will buy a book written by someone they have never heard of.
