INTERVIEW WITH PATRICIA BRADLEY

I’ve known Patricia Bradley, Pat to those of us who know her, since the beginning of time. It feels like she’s always been in my life, but not really. She’s one of those people you know and love and want to know better.

The first time I met Pat was at a KenTen Writers Retreat. Our mutual friend, the late Sandra Robbins, invited Pat to attend. We had rented a house in West Tennessee, and it was one of the most difficult places to get to that I had ever been. Pat arrived without any trouble, the rest of us had a rough time.

We were waiting for Sandra Robbins. She called me and said she was lost. I had a feeling if I went to the top of the hill, I’d find her easily. She was coming in the same snaky way I did. Pat volunteered to go with me, and she said, “Let’s turn left.” We did, and if you saw the movie Deliverance, we were there. A rough logging road with sparse houses. When we got to a paved road, I suggested we turn the way I thought we should go. At the bottom of the hill sat Sandra in her locked car. She was terrified. We got her to the house and let her rest, but we all had a ball with Pat in our presence.

I hope you will get to know her better.

Kathy: Pat, for our readers who are not familiar with you, tell us a little about yourself.

Pat: I grew up in Memphis and was not one of those writers who always wanted to be a writer. I didn’t have stories I had kept since I was in third grade. No, I was a reader until I turned 35 and these people came to live in my head and wouldn’t leave me alone until I told their stories. When I killed them off, I knew I was going to write suspense or mystery. Little did I know I would include romance.

Kathy: I’ve read quite a few of your books. How many books have your written?

Pat: I am working on my third series for Revell, so that means I’ve written ten books for them, starting the eleventh. I’ve also written two Harlequin Heartwarming books and three novellas. I’m also working on a proposal for a Love Inspired Suspense story.

Kathy: Which book is your favorite?

Pat: You’d love for me to tell you that, wouldn’t you? To be perfectly honest, I can’t, but if I could it would either by my first book, Shadows of the Past or the one that just released – Standoff. Or the one that’s in edits…

Kathy: I loved Shadows of the Past.

Kathy: Why did you want to write?

Pat: I didn’t. Never thought about it until those people came to live in my head. It was the only way to get them to go away…then more came and here we are today.

Kathy: What do you enjoy doing the most in your spare time?

Pat: What spare time? I’ve written nine 95,000-word books, two 75,000-word books and those three novellas…but if I had spare time, I’d love to get out in my pottery room and make mugs and vases and jewelry.

Kathy: What’s your favorite movie?

Pat: You’re asking the wrong person. I know I should watch more movies, but it’s hard for me to even plan to watch a movie. But I did see The Phantom of the Opera more than once. Guess that would be the one.

Kathy: Let’s talk about What made you want to write about the Natchez Trace?

Pat: I’ve always been fascinated with the Trace, as we call it around here. One stretch of it is about thirty miles from me and I’ve traveled it from Natchez to Nashville, but more the northern part. But to be able to walk where people walked hundreds of years ago is amazing. And the Trace is so interesting.

Kathy: The first time we were on the Trace, I had to get out of the car and walk one of the trails. Like you said, I walked were people did hundreds of years ago. Yes, amazing.

Kathy: I love traveling the Natchez Trace. It is an easy, relaxing drive. We’ve seen some things that made us wonder if it is as dangerous as your book makes it. Is there usually a lot of crime in that area of Mississippi?

Pat: There isn’t a lot of crime that I know of on the Trace, but it is a lonesome drive and the possibilities are endless. There are very capable Park Rangers patrolling the Trace and they are ever alert.

Kathy: Do you have more books up your sleeve?

Pat: There will be four books in this series. One is out, one is waiting for edits and I’m starting the third which will (at this time) be set at Melrose in Natchez. I’ve been there and hope to return when this virus is over! Before the virus hit, Revell was looking at a fourth series set near the Gulf Coast in Mississippi. It will be about a female sheriff and the first book will involve a serial killer.

Personally, I can’t wait to read the next book. Thanks, Pat for being my first guest! Pat will send a special person who makes a comment a copy of Standoff. Please leave lots of comments and be that special person. I know you’ll enjoy it. You’ll sit on the edge of your chair.

  1. I have a copy, and I’ve already read and reviewed Standoff – and it is a KEEPER!! I’m super-excited to get to the next one! Good to “see” you, Patricia!! 🙂

  2. Kathy and Pat I’ve heard the Sandra Robbins, “Lost In The Wilderness” story, and have laughed at it time and again. That was the retreat I missed, but I still hear tales about it. Pat, I admire your diligence and the way you craft a story, building the tension. God has blessed you with a gift and you are using it for Him.

I loved the interview and wish you many more blessings as you use the gift God gave you.
